The Five Elements: Ayurveda and Buddhism
At Krishi Ayurveda and Yoga, we share stories and insights that connect ancient wellness practices with your modern life.

In Ayurveda, the ancient science of life, everything in the universe — including our body — is made up of five fundamental elements, called Panchamahabhuta: Earth (Prithvi), Water (Jala), Fire (Agni), Air (Vayu), and Space (Akasha). These elements form the building blocks of the physical and subtle world, shaping our body, mind, and the natural environment. Health and harmony arise when these elements are in balance, and imbalance leads to disease or discomfort.
Interestingly, in Buddhism, a similar concept exists called Sathara Mahabhuta, which also speaks of four or five great elements composing all matter. While the names and classifications differ slightly, the principle is the same: everything in the world is made of elemental forces, and understanding them helps us perceive the connection between our body, mind, and the universe.
By studying the Panchamahabhuta, Ayurveda teaches us not only about our physical health but also how we relate to nature, seasons, and life itself. Recognizing these elements within us encourages balance, mindfulness, and holistic well-being — ideas that resonate with Buddhist teachings as well.
